University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL)

Paediatric Services in Leicester are co located within the three main hospitals of UHL. The majority of Paediatric and Maternity services are located in the Leicester Royal Infirmary (LRI) with Paediatric Cardiac services at Glenfield hospital and a small SCBU co-located with a second Maternity Unit at Leicester General Hospital.  We serve a population of 800,000 as the local hospitals for the Leicester Metropolitan area. There are regional and supraregional services such as Neonatology, Paediatric Surgery, Respiratory Medicine and Cardiothoracic Surgery (including ECMO).  The Children’s Hospital Business Unit has 90 beds including a neonatal, children’s and paediatric cardiac intensive care units; over 40 consultants across specialities and 4 WTE paediatric radiologists.  The Children’s CBU sees 11,000 new OPD cases per year and 11,000 acute admissions. The Paediatric Imaging Department at LRI has dedicated rooms for plain radiography, fluoroscopy and ultrasound with access to two 1.5T MRI scanners; two 64 slice CT Scanners; two double headed gamma cameras; and a 2 room fluoroscopy/ interventional suite.

A trainee will experience working in a modern paediatric radiology department and gain broad general and specialised paediatric experience.  There are 44,000 imaging examinations performed each year in children covering all modalities. All body system imaging is covered by the four paediatric radiologists including neuroradiology, with further subspecialist input in cardiac CT and MRI. The paediatric radiologists are supported by full teams of vascular and non vascular interventional radiologists. There are up to 3 trainees from the local radiology training scheme basic rotation attached at any one time and we will accept a further trainee, interested in becoming a paediatric radiologist for further subspecialty training.

Internal trainees often have an additional 3 month OOPE in an area of highly specialised supraregional paediatric radiology in their 5th year but during their internal attachment will have the opportunity to manage and investigate all areas of acute paediatric imaging.

The paediatric imaging specialty has a tradition of producing Consultant Paediatric Radiologists equipped to work in DGH, Childrens Hospital and Individual Paediatric Radiology specialties in the UK and North America.
