Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust, Liverpool

Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is one of the few tertiary children’s hospitals in the UK where dedicated training in paediatric radiology has been available and quite popular among trainees.

 The major highlight of our scheme is that it appeals to trainees who want to consider a future career in a large DGH, as well as trainees who want to focus purely on paediatric radiology in a tertiary centre.

 Over the years we have had a number of registrars and fellows (UK and international) who have successfully undergone sub-speciality training here.

 Currently, we have a 5th year post (usually for post-FRCR 2B-candidates) that is taken up by one of the local trainees from within the Mersey region for sub-specialty training in paediatric radiology.

 In the absence of a trainee from within the region, this post could be filled by a suitable candidate from outside the region who may wish to come here as part of the ‘Out of Programme Activity’ (either as an ‘Out of programme experience’ or Out of programme training’) Please refer to the college guidelines for further information on this: http://www.rcr.ac.uk/content.aspx?PageID=955.

 

1.         THE TRUST

Alder Hey Children’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is a major teaching hospital of the University of Liverpool.  It serves not only the local population of children, but is the tertiary referral centre for children from Merseyside, Cheshire, parts of Lancashire, Shropshire and North Wales for many sub-specialties of paediatrics.  The Trust provides a range of community services including school nursing, home carers and a child development centre.  A child and adolescent mental health service is also provided with an inpatient unit based at the Trust.  The hospital has approximately, 270 beds, including day beds for surgery.  The paediatric services and expertise within the hospital are considerable and include paediatric ophthalmology, cardiology, cardio-thoracic surgery, neonatology, neurology, neurosurgery, audiology, nephrology, respiratory medicine, oncology, trauma, general surgery and general medicine. The radiology department provides all imaging modalities, including nuclear medicine, CT and MRI.

 

A purpose-built Education Centre is situated on the hospital site and is available for all postgraduate educational activity.

 

 

2.      THE DEPARTMENT

 

The Department of Radiology currently has three general rooms, one fluoroscopy suite, one ultrasound suite with 3 couches, a spiral C.T. scanner, an M.R. scanner, a bone densitometer and a Radionuclide Imaging Department.

 

Within the Theatre complex, and in close proximity to the ICU, there is a Vascular Intervention Suite with biplane facilities. This room is shared between the Cardiologists and the Department of Radiology and all angiographic procedures take place within this suite.

Also within the theatre complex, a 3 Tesla MRI scanner has been installed (2009) which can be used for intra-operative imaging. This is also used for general imaging at other times and provides opportunities for research.

The department performs approximately 66,000 examinations per year over all modalities. 

 The neonatal unit is at Liverpool Women's Hospital but radiologists from Alder Hey  cover all imaging examinations performed at the Women’s hospital..         

 Patient Archiving and Communication System installed and active since June 2007 in conjunction with CRIS radiology reporting system with voice activated dictation (Dragon).

The Specialist Registrars and Fellows in Radiology share an office with Internet and Medline facilities.

 

4.                FACILITIES

 

General Equipment:  The three general radiology rooms are equipped with extended bucky tables and generator equipment suitable for children.  In addition, there are facilities for dental radiology and a cephalostat.

 

Fluoroscopy: Siemens Fluoroscopy unit installed in April 2009.

 

C.T.  Philips Ingenuity Core 128 slice scanner being installed December 2012..

 

M.R.I.  Philips 1.5 Tesla Achieva (installed in October 2005).

Philips 3 Tesla Intraoperative Scanner installed in 2009 (sited outside the Radiology Department, within the Theatre complex).

 

Ultrasound:  Currently installed are three Phillips iU22 machines with colour Doppler facility.  In addition, there is a Phillips portable ultrasound machine which the Department of Radiology uses in the operating theatres, wards and Intensive Care Unit.

 

Computed Radiography and PACS:  The department is equipped with an Agfa Computed Radiography system and a GE PACS system.

 

Nuclear Medicine:  A single head GE Gamma camera with SPECT facility, linked to a Nuclear Diagnostics computer system, was installed in May 2003.

 

Bone Densitometer:  Hologic Scanner installed August 2007.

 

Cardiovascular Imaging Suite: Siemens Artis dBC installed February 2008. (sited outside the radiology department within the hospital theatre suite complex)

 

Computing equipment:  There are full facilities within the Department for Powerpoint, Word processing, spreadsheets etc. We also have the ability to scan slides and x-rays for presentations and teaching purposes, We are currently in the process of acquiring an iMac on which teaching cases will be stored using the Osirix platform. This will be available for teaching registrars and fellows and will simulate the RCR FRCR 2B exam.

 

Other facilities within the Department:  The Department has its own Seminar Room and Teaching Museum.  The purpose built Education Centre in the hospital has an excellent lecture theatre, seminar rooms and library.

 

5.                 TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

 

The fellow will have plenty of opportunities to undertake general reporting, fluoroscopy and ultrasound, CT and MRI under the direction of the Consultant Radiologists. There will also be opportunities to assist with vascular and interventional procedures. All of this will be supervised heavily, but training will be tailored to suit individual needs and experience with opportunity to report independently if appropriate, towards the end of the training.

 

There is also an opportunity to gain experience in neonatal radiology at the Liverpool Women’s Hospital.

 

We encourage senior trainees to lead MDT meetings. 

 

On-call:  the fellow will participate in a 1 in 6 on call rota.

A Consultant Radiologist is always available on-call; trainees undertake emergency reporting and procedures under the direction of, or at the request of the on-call Consultant. With increasing experience and competence, the holder of the sub-specialist training post will have the opportunity to take on a greater degree of responsibility for emergency radiology.

6.         RESEARCH

 

The fellow will be encouraged to undertake at least one research project.

 

 

 

7.        TEACHING    

 

Regular protected, departmental teaching is held for the benefit of the rotating specialist registrars and fellows from Mersey deanery. There will be opportunities to participate actively in training the rotating Specialist Registrars in Radiology, and in Undergraduate and Postgraduate teaching.  Dr. Krishna Harave is the College Tutor for the department.


8.         AUDIT AND CLINICAL GOVERNANCE

 

The department has an on-going audit programme which selectively covers various aspects of paediatric radiology.  Presentations are made within the department from time to time and in addition, to the hospital wide audit programme.  All members of the department are encouraged to be actively involved in audit. Dr Caren Landes and Dr Krishna Harave are the consultants with special responsibility for and actively involved in encouraging the registrars and fellows in audits and local and regional presentations and poster presentations.

 

 

 

9.       PROFILE OF LIVERPOOL

 Liverpool is an old established port city which has experienced major revitalisation in recent years.  The city is a cosmopolitan and vibrant centre for industry and commerce. 

 

The city of Liverpool is compact and is served by excellent links to both the motorway network and rail services.  It is within easy reach of Liverpool and Manchester airports.  Most of its suburbs are within 30 minutes travelling of the city centre.  Liverpool has recently been awarded the prestigious honour of being the European Capital of Culture 2008.

 

The city has historically been a centre for the arts and sport.  Liverpool's theatres, concert halls, museums and art collections are nationally acclaimed.  Art galleries, include the Walker and Tate.  The Philharmonic Hall is home to the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.  The city is also alive with a huge variety of independent theatre groups, musicians and artists and is of course famous for "The Beatles".

 

As well as its two premiership football teams, Liverpool is home to first class county cricket and top-level rugby union.  The Grand National has made Aintree racecourse world-renowned.  The city also has unrivalled facilities for participative sport at all levels.

 

Liverpool is rightly famous for its two cathedrals, but it is also home to two major universities with a rich and varied academic community.  The city can offer a range of excellent schools in both the independent and state sectors.

 

The city's recent renaissance, centred on the re-development of the docks and inner city, has also made Liverpool a centre for tourism with millions of visitors each year coming to enjoy the city and the surrounding area.  Liverpool is within easy reach of the national parks of North Wales, the Peak District and the Lake District, as well as the Lancashire and Welsh coasts and historic cities such as Chester and Lancaster.

 

 

The post holder must be a medical practitioner fully registered with the General Medical Council.  The appointment is subject to clearance by the Criminal Records Bureau and satisfactory medical screening results, including verification of hepatitis B status.
